Horse
As I trot and I grunt
As I run from danger
As my pack follows me
As I always stay brave,
I never give up.
I never lose a fight.
My mane swishes in the wind.
My friends are family.
My coat keeps me warm.
I always am. . . .
Cocoa the Horse
-- Kate G.
Shades
I block the sun from your eyes.
You don’t wear sunglasses inside.
When it’s cold I blow in the wind.
You don’t notice I helped,
But I did.
A common shade of privacy.
I make it so your eyes can see.
I make is so your eyes aren’t hurtin’.
I am a curtain.
-- Lilly R.
Hyenas
Adapted from a poem by Amy Gibson
Oh, we smile as we hunt
in the long grass by the stream,
but we’re not the bay guys
that some make it seem.
Though we giggle after sundown
in a wild song
and with strong jaws
we eat King Kong.
As garbage collectors
we are great.
And it’s not our fault
if we exaggerate.
--Lilian, Sawyer, and Sophia
Rock
I can be an ore
or even more.
Like a statue
adn even a weapon that
can catch you.
I can skip on water
and be used on an otter.
I cannot talk
and so I am a rock.
--Carter T.
Heron
Adapted from a poem by Abigail Hemenway
High
on two towering legs
bright sky blue
tipped wings
vanilla ice cream white
serrated beak
snowy white neck
leans over scintillating water
Smoothly, placidly.
Cotton candy wings
are perfect,
so majestic that
all the other fowl
withdraw at its elegance.
--Jesse L., Hean N., Nicole D.
The Beautiful Butterfly
I am a butterfly.
I shift in the sky up in the clouds.
My colors are magical in case you asked.
I also am wise.
On top of flowers, I suck nectar.
I’m harmless to you and I am harmless to others.
My wings are sensitive.
When you touch me I begin to fly up again.
--Diana V.
Pencil
I have a sharp point
And I always leave a mark.
The older I get, the shorter I get
People use me all the time.
I can be made of wood.
My best friend is an eraser.
I am a pencil.
--Maya, Esaul, Kyle, Jone, Alexa, Reilly, Sawyer, Olivia
Magical Creature
Head of the one with the spiral tail that stretches out.
Wings for waves, not wind.
A nightly bottom,
Then lower, the clip cloppers.
--Sofia F.
Magical Fish
A goldfish is a goldfish
But a Tiklelaka Momo fish
is a whole other story!
It has 3 gills, an eye,
4 ears, but it still can’t hear
8 noses but nothing ever smells.
This, my friend, is a
Tikelaka Momo fish!
--Sawyer L.
