Dan the Antique-Collecting Man
(inspired by Shel Silverstein's "Hector the Collector")
Dan the antique-collecting man
collected chiming clocks
and vintage cars with shiny hoods,
with doors that had mysterious locks,
mahogany tables with ladder-back chairs
ancient scrolls from many places,
embroidered costumes from the Middle Ages
and Egyptian mummies with golden cases;
porcelain tea cups from Cambridge, England,
feather pens with rusted ink wells
log Cabin quilts in faded colors
horses' bridles with silver bells;
a butter churn without its paddle
some old silk worms used for trade
a broken lantern without a wick
and a suit of armor without its spade.
He had no respect for these items;
he believed they definitely had no use,
so Dan decided to sell his apparent junk,
rather than having it abused.
When he went to the town,
he sold his antiques for a song,
even though most townspeople said
that selling his antiques cheaply was wrong.
